Here are presented the great personalities of our community who have been honored in appreciation of their remarkable contribution to the ECVAA. They have been granted Honorary membership to the College of the European Veterinary Specialists in Anaesthesia and Analgesia, or received the Morpheus Award.

Both Honorary Membership and the Morpheus Award are delivered to such persons who have made exceptional contributions to Veterinary Anaesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care, and/or to the working of the College. Until 2014, the Honorary Membership was granted to Diplomates of the ECVAA in recognition of their major contribution. In 2015, it was decided to grant Honorary Membership only to non-diplomates of the College who deserve recognition. In parallell, an award for Lifetime Achievement in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia can be delivered every year to a diplomate of the ECVAA. The criteria are similar for both titles. Nominations for the award shall be made through the sponsorship of at least two diplomates of high standing, and will be voted by the whole Membership.

Some aspects of these contributions can also be appreciated in publications relating the history of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy, and of the ECVAA. As an example we can recommend the reading of the specific chapter on “A History of Veterinary Anesthesia”, from Prof. Eugene P. Steffey, in “The wondrous story of Anesthesia”, 2014, Eds. Edmond I Egeg II, Lawrence J. Saidman, Rod N. Westhorpe, Springer, Chapter 23 pp. 293.

The ECVAA is greatly thankful and indebted forever to its “Grandfathers” who contributed to its birth between 1993 and 1997 (more information about ECVAA history here). They were proposed for Honorary Membership to the ECVAA in 2003 (September) during the World AVA Congress of Veterinary Anesthesia, Knoxville, USA, and positively voted by the college in 2004 (April) at the European AVA Congress of Veterinary Anesthesia, London, GB.
